Blanding Town Hall Q & A
Apr 06 2012
I would like to thank everyone who attended my recent town hall meeting in Blanding, UT. If you were unable to attend the town hall or tune in to the live stream of the event, here are some highlights. I had some great questions from those in attendance.

Ensuring the 21st century is another American century should be Congress’s top priority. There is no reason for America to take a backseat to China or any nation as the world’s economic superpower. Congress’s role in the effort is clear—it can either lay the policy foundation for, or create hurdles against, achieving economic prosperity.

Individual Liberty and Obamacare

Decisions about where you go to the doctor and how you're going to pay for it are not decisions that are national in nature, according to the text and spirit and letter and history and understanding of the constitution. They are not and they cannot be. If in this instance we say well, this is just important so we need to allow Congress to act, if we do that, we do so at our own peril. We stand to lose a great deal if all of a sudden we allow Congress to regulate something that is not economic activity.

Senate Judiciary Committee: Antitrust Subcommittee Hearing March 21, 2012

Hundreds of millions of Americans pay for cell phones, cable television, home internet connections, and land line telephone services. In fact, there are over 320 million wireless subscriber connections in the United States, meaning there are more cell phone contracts than there are people. Over 100 million households have cable video service and nearly 50 million pay for high-speed cable internet. So the announcement late last year of commercial agreements between four of the country’s largest cable companies and the country’s largest wireless phone services company understandably attracted attention.

So I just wanted to ask, given how well it’s been managed under the Central Utah Water Conservancy District and given the problems that we had when it was previously under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Reclamation. Why is it a good idea to change that?

Today, I visited the Utah state legislature to personally deliver a copy of my 2011 annual report to every legislator and every constitutional officer. I also addressed both the House and the Senate from their respective floors. Photos of the event are below.

The assault on religious conscience by the White House highlights the imperative of repealing ObamaCare. We know it will raise premiums. We know it will require higher taxes. We know it will kill jobs. And the more we start to peel back the layers of this 2,700 page onion, the more we learn how it encroaches on our basic freedoms and constitutionally guaranteed liberties. The most recent discovery is the attempt, by this administration, to mandate that all insurance plans cover contraception, sterilization, and morning-after pills that induce abortion. The government has no right to force individuals, companies or organizations to purchase or provide a product or service that stands in contradiction with deeply held religious and moral beliefs. We cannot stand for this violation of personal and religious liberty. Together with improving our economy and creating jobs, repealing ObamaCare must remain a top priority.
I spoke today at the Heritage Foundation regarding the president's unconstitutional appointments and the theft of power that belongs to the people and is to be exercised by their representatives in the Senate. A transcript of my remarks is below. At the bottom of the page is a downloadable file with the transcript including the relevant footnotes.

Today, I spoke on the floor of the Senate to explain how the president is trying to take power that is not his, and why his wrongheaded decision will cause me to no longer provide the level of cooperation with his nominees that I had been providing up to this point. Here is a transcript of my remarks:
