I was able to attend the Utah Association of Counties Rural Caucus meeting where we discussed a variety of issues including: Antiquities Act reform, wild horse and burro management, and water shed management.

Payment in Lieu of Taxes

I was able to be on the Utah House floor for a vote on legislation urging Congress to keep its promise to provide fair payment in lieu of taxes for all the federal land in the state of Utah. This legislation passed both the Utah House and Senate unanimously.

Discussing the Opioid Crisis in Utah

I met with Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes and Utah DEA Special Agent in Charge Brian Besser to discuss efforts to combat the opioid crisis in Utah. Together we developed an action plan to address the root causes of this issue. My staff is doing great work researching the numbers and causes behind the opioid crisis as part of the Social Capital Project. You can view their work here.

Voices of Central and Southern Utah

I recently had the opportunity to travel to central and southern Utah to meet with the people of Carbon, Emery, Grand, Juab, Sanpete, San Juan, Sevier, and Wayne counties. Like most who visit central and southern Utah, I am continually awed by the natural beauty found there. What a privilege it is for me to represent the people of this great state, and what a privilege it is to call Utah my home.

On Tuesday, July 26 at 7:45 p.m. MT, Senator Mike Lee will be hosting a statewide teleforum to discuss federal land policy. The Obama Administration is considering designating 1.9 million acres in San Juan County as the Bears Ears National Monument. Excessively large national monument designations like this are very controversial, because they ignore state and local government land management policy and silence the voices of local residents impacted by the monument by excluding their elected representatives in Congress from the designation process.
