Aug 6, 2022

In Utah, the federal government owns 66.48% of the total land. Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) are federal payments to local governments designed to offset losses in property taxes due to nontaxable federal lands within their boundaries. However, these payments are far lower than what local governments could expect to collect in property taxes. To regard PILT payments as tax equivalents in Utah cities, they would need to be 262 times larger.

Sen. Lee Calls for the Release of Lt. Alkonis

Jul 25, 2022

Madam President, On Sunday, Lt. Ridge Alkonis was forced to leave his wife and three children to report to Japanese prison. An American serviceman had to explain to his kids that although he did nothing wrong, he had to leave them for three years. While serving his country in Japan, Lt. Alkonis was involved in a car accident resulting from a medical emergency. The accident left two people dead. I speak sincerely when I say my deepest sympathies are with their families, friends, and loved ones. I can’t begin to imagine their sense of loss, confusion, hurt, and anger associated with this horrific accident.
